What is Burnout?

Burnout is a state of chronic stress that leads to physical and emotional exhaustion, feelings of cynicism and detachment, and a sense of ineffectiveness or lack of accomplishment. It develops gradually over time when the demands placed on us exceed our capacity to recover.

While often associated with work, burnout can stem from caregiving responsibilities, chronic health challenges, relationship stress, or the accumulation of multiple life stressors. Understanding your unique patterns can help you find the path to recovery.

Common Signs of Burnout

Physical Exhaustion

Persistent tiredness that doesn't improve with rest, feeling drained even after sleep, low energy throughout the day.

Emotional Depletion

Feeling emotionally numb, easily overwhelmed, increased irritability, or a sense of detachment from things you used to enjoy.

Sleep Disruption

Difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently, unrefreshing sleep, or sleeping too much but still feeling tired.

Reduced Resilience

Decreased ability to cope with stress, feeling overwhelmed by small challenges, difficulty bouncing back from setbacks.

Gentle Steps Toward Recovery

  • 1.Acknowledge what you're experiencing. Burnout is real and valid. You don't need to push through or minimize what you're feeling.
  • 2.Prioritize basic needs. Sleep, nutrition, and gentle movement form the foundation of recovery. Start small and be patient with yourself.
  • 3.Create boundaries. Identify what drains you most and look for ways to reduce exposure, even temporarily.
  • 4.Seek support. Whether from friends, family, a therapist, or healthcare provider, you don't have to navigate this alone.
